When equipped with its optional stability control, the Forester joins Subaru's Legacy and B9 Tribeca in receiving IIHS recognition for safety. When powered by its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the Forester gets 23/29 miles per gallon city/highway mileage. When motivated by a detuned version of the 2.5-liter turbo out of the Subaru WRX STi, it makes 224 horsepower. Both versions come with a five-speed manual transmission, with an optional four-speed automatic. Anti-lock brakes slow the vehicle, and front side airbags that protect both the head and torso of the front passengers are standard.
