Changfeng Motors Preview
Why it Matters

Changfeng Motors displayed several vehicles at the Detroit Auto Show, and each revealed how far they have to go before measuring up to U.S. standards. In essence, Changfeng introduced itself to the North American marketplace and promised to one day come back with better cars. Given the company’s background of growth, it would be foolish to doubt it. Formed in the 50s as a small repair facility, Changfeng started moving fast during the so-called reform years, going from a production capacity of 633 in 1996 to over 100,000 today. In the next five years, they plan to grow that capacity to around 280,000 vehicles. Up to now, Changfeng has built vehicles under license with Mitsubishi Motors, though they have aggressive plans to design and build their own from scratch.
